For anyone who doesn’t know, biltong is salted meat, usually beef or game, dried with a blend of spices. It dates from the time when it was necessary to preserve large amounts of available meat. Nowadays it is a delicacy; excellent with a cold beer. If eaten as a dietary item, be aware that it is salty.
Some people like dry biltong, others prefer it with different degrees of moisture. Some like it lean, others with fat on. We make our biltong from topside or silverside beef for lean biltong, or from skirt which is marbled with fat through the cut.
Note: you can buy good biltong practically anywhere now, and get it online, delivered to you in plastic bags.
We like meat and love biltong, but in these times when we should be eating less meat, we have a different philosophy – we make it in artisanal amounts and (as with all our products), prefer to sell it direct to our customers, face-to-face, or through retail outlets, either uncut or freshly cut, in paper packets.
However, we will despatch it within the UK double packed in a paper bag vacuum packed in a plastic bag, with some biltong spices to restore spiciness.
We use no monosodium glutamate or any other preservative in the manufacture of our biltong. The price will still be competitive!
Our rusks are the traditional boerebeskuit buttermilk; another
lightweight and sustaining treat. Sweet and satisfying, they are delicious dunked in coffee or tea.
We will be adding other flavours to our range soon!
Cape pickled fish is a curried and pickled delicacy with its spicy origins in the cuisine brought to the Cape by Malay slaves centuries ago.
It is usually eaten cold as a snack with bread and butter, or as part of a cold meal. In South Africa it is more usually known as ‘kerrievis’ – curried fish.
We make it in a vacuum sealed jar which we can send to you within the UK. You can store it unrefrigerated until it is opened. After that, if there is any left, it will keep for ages in the ‘fridge.
